How the quiz decides

The quiz looks at four things: your AGI relative to the IRS Free File limit, how involved your return is, whether you want software, forms or a person, and a few situations (military service, age, access needs) that open other free programs. It never asks for your name, Social Security number or income details, and it does not record your answers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IRS Free File income limit?

For 2025 returns (filed in 2026) the IRS says guided Free File software is free if your AGI was $89,000 or less. Each partner also sets its own rules such as age, state and military status. Free File Fillable Forms have no income limit.

Do I have to start at IRS.gov?

Yes. To get the free Free File offer you must begin from the Free File page on IRS.gov, not from the software company’s own website.

Is IRS Direct File still available?

The IRS said Direct File would not be available for the 2026 filing season. See our explainer for current status and alternatives.

Does “free” include my state return?

Not always. Some Free File partners include a state return at no cost and others charge. Our state guides note free options where we know them.
